All three LSV federal safety standards

What FMVSS Actually Means

FMVSS stands for Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. Low Speed Vehicles must meet three specific standards. Every North Star build is certified against all three.

FMVSS No. 500

Low Speed Vehicles

The primary standard governing all LSV/NEV equipment requirements. If your vehicle will operate on public streets posted at 35 mph or under, it must comply with FMVSS 500.

Every North Star build ships with all required equipment installed and documented.

FMVSS No. 111

Rear Visibility

Requires a rearview system that gives the driver an adequate view of the area behind the vehicle. On North Star builds, this is satisfied by the large screen head unit paired with an HD backup camera.

Every build receives camera installation with the head unit as a unit — compliance is not optional.

Backup Camera Required Auto-activate on reverse

Why this matters: Many "street legal" golf cart conversions skip this standard entirely. North Star doesn't.

FMVSS No. 141

Minimum Sound Requirement (AVAS)

Electric and hybrid vehicles must emit a minimum alert sound at low speeds so pedestrians — particularly visually impaired individuals — can detect the vehicle's presence.

North Star's proprietary AVAS system is designed and built in-house specifically for our builds.

AVAS Required ≤18.6 mph Controller Speed Sensor Proprietary Firmware Compliant Sound Profile

Built in-house: The North Star AVAS is one of very few custom-designed systems in the LSV aftermarket space.

Your VIN and Why It Matters

Every North Star build gets a unique Vehicle Identification Number — not a sticker, a real registered VIN under our federally assigned World Manufacturer Identifier.

MANUFACTURER'S CERTIFICATE OF ORIGIN

The MCO is the document that automakers issue when a new vehicle leaves the factory. It's the first document in the title chain. Without it, your "street legal" cart is just a golf cart.

Every North Star build receives a North Star-issued MCO. You take that document to any Minnesota DVS office and title your vehicle exactly like you would a car. Standard title and registration fees apply.

The MCO is what makes your build a real vehicle — not a liability waiting to happen.

  • Issued by North Star Electric Vehicles LLC
  • Includes: VIN, year, make, model, GVWR
  • Used in lieu of standard certificate of title
  • MN §168A.05 — Manufacturer MCO process
